  24.             The Harvard Online Library Information System (HOLLIS)  pro-
  25.             vides  access to a number of databases including two library
  26.             catalogs.  The  union  catalog  of  the  Harvard  University
  27.             libraries  contains  approximately three million records for
  28.             books,  journals,  manuscripts,  scores,  sound  recordings,
  29.             visual  materials,  and computer files in the collections of
  30.             most of the Harvard libraries.  (This database includes most
  31.             items  cataloged since 1977, and is adding records for older
  32.             materials at the rate of approximately one million per  year
  33.             through a major retrospective conversion project.) The cata-
  34.             log of older Widener Library materials contains about a mil-
  35.             lion short records for books cataloged for the main research
  36.             library before 1977.

  40.             HOLLIS   is   available   via   Telnet    or    TN3270    to
  41.             hollis.harvard.edu  (128.103.60.31).  To exit, use your Tel-
  42.             net escape sequence.

  44.             _W_h_o _C_a_n _U_s_e _t_h_e _C_a_t_a_l_o_g

  46.             HOLLIS is available to all.  Many of  the  HOLLIS  databases
  47.             are  available  with  no access restrictions.  Certain other
  48.             databases may be restricted to Harvard students and  employ-
  49.             ees because of agreements with the database vendors.
